A new year reminds me of a fresh start for all. The year offers new experiences, creative ideas and exploration with a spirit of optimism.
As a Michigan native, I’ve always respected the work of Herman Miller and recently subscribed to their education newsletter. Herman Miller of Zeeland,
Michigan is a highly respected international furniture design company that is
identified with “modern” furniture. Designers such as George Nelson and Charles
and Ray Eames created iconic pieces as part of the Herman Miller
community. This piece by Alexander
Girard, titled January, accompanied a
recent New Year’s message I received from the company. I like the creative continuance of this
design; indeed, a new beginning.
Fifty years ago, Alexander Girard, the head of Herman Miller’s Textile Division from 1952 to 1973, introduced this playful design and called it “January.” Girard’s distinctive combination of color, originality, and spirit came from his love of folk art, his world travels, and his delightfully curious personality. We hope the optimism of Girard’s design inspires your new year.
I think Herman Miller
is a great example of a Midwestern organization that values exploration,
creativity, and new beginnings. I am always pleased, and very proud, to come
across an example of Midwest creativity and risk-taking. In fact, it is what
drew me to the Joyce Ivy Foundation initially.
I admire the curiosity and willingness to step outside their comfort
zones that the Joyce Ivy
Foundation Summer Scholars demonstrate.
We look for those qualities when reviewing applications for the program.
I hope you will step
outside your comfort zone and try something new to honor the new year.
