Dartmouth College is a private, Ivy League school located in Hanover, New Hampshire. The school, which is older than the United States of America (the original charter was from the King of England) was established in 1769. Some unique facilities available on campus are an observatory, and centers for humanities, social sciences, physical science, performing arts, ethics, life science and computation. Dartmouth is home to approximately 4,200 undergraduates and only 1% are part-time students. Dartmouth also has a 95% graduation rate and 8:1 student-faculty ratio.

Following are some fun facts about this 246 year old institution:

  •          The school’s nickname, “The Big Green,” is based off of the school’s color of forest green. Dartmouth chose forest green as their official color in 1866, the reason this color was chosen was because it was the only color not currently being used by another school.

  •          Before orientation, the majority of each incoming class participates in class “trips” which are 5-day outdoor programs that encourage bonding and help acclimate students to their new home. With 97% of the students moving to campus from out of state, this program is very beneficial and praised by the incoming class every year.

  •          Another unique aspect of Dartmouth’s learning environment is that students are required to spend their sophomore summer on campus. The students have the opportunity to explore their majors and potential careers during this summer, which is half way through their undergraduate career.

  •          There are many other annual traditions at Dartmouth not entirely focused on the academic plan. Every Homecoming, the freshman class builds a bonfire and runs around it a set number of times in concordance with their class year.

  •         Another tradition is Polar Bear Swim that takes place at Occom Pond during the winter carnival.

  •         From former students like Dr. Seuss and Robert Frost to Mindy Kaling and Meryl Streep, Dartmouth College is home to a diverse student body and has remained one of the top educational intuitions in the world for the past 246 years.

  •         Dartmouth also leads the Ivy League schools in study abroad programs

  •        Dartmouth offers over 2,100 courses
