Located in the heart of Baltimore, MD, in 1876 Johns Hopkins University became the
first research institution to be founded in the Western Hemisphere and today boasts
an impressive resume filled with top rankings, life-changing innovations, and
illustrious faculty and alumni from around the globe. Although known as one of the
best undergraduate schools for premeds, JHU offers over fifty majors and forty
minors, all of which are consistently ranked as the best in their respective fields.
With an acceptance rate of 15%, it is one of the most popular universities in
America and also has one of the highest ranked Division I lacrosse teams in
the NCAA.

Here are some more fun facts about Johns Hopkins University:

  • Hopkins is the oldest research university in America and also has the largest endowment, both federally and privately, specifically for research

  • Researchers pioneered the field of genetic engineering by discovering “biochemical scissors,” which are essentially just restriction enzymes.

  • In 2014, JHU had over 2,000 active patents that generated $16.5 billion in licensing revenue.

  • Hopkins is Maryland’s largest private employer.

  • In 1929, a barbershop for faculty and students was built in the basement of Levering Hall.

  • The Whiting School of Engineering became the first named division in 1979 after a gift from George William Carlyle Whiting.

  • Sterling Brunch (which includes such gourmet food as cocktail shrimp, smoked salmon with cream cheese, baked brie, hand-dipped chocolate strawberries, and a live jazz band) takes place several times throughout the course of the year, and is one of the reasons why JHU's 2014 #2 ranking in college food comes as of no surprise.
