College Hall, one of the oldest buildings on Penn's campus

Located in Philadelphia, the University of Pennsylvania is a prestigious private research
university that was founded in 1740 by Benjamin Franklin. It is a member
of the Ivy League and attended by a diverse group of students from around the world.  Penn’s 302 acre campus is home to over 200 buildings, 141 research centers and
institutes, 10,000 undergraduate students, and 11,000 graduate students.

Here are some more fun facts about the University of Pennsylvania:

  • Penn is America's first university,  as it was the first institution of higher learning with multiple schools and faculties (unlike Harvard, which was the first college)

  • Penn's libraries are home to over 6.19 million books in print, not including the 1.1 million e-books, and 116,000 e-journals that Penn students can also access.

  • Nearly 14,000 University students participate in some form of community service

  • Penn ranks 1st among the Ivy League schools and 12th nationwide among doctoral/research institutions in the number of students studying abroad.

  • Notable  alumni include Donald Trump, Hoodie Allen, Elon Musk, Gloria Allred, William Henry Harrison, John Legend, Elizabeth Banks, Mehmet Oz, and William Carlos Williams.

  • Every  year, the “moving-up” of the junior undergraduate class is celebrated on Hey Day, when thousands of students march around campus with red shirts, canes, and straw hats.

  • As a nod to the line "Here's a toast to dear old Penn" in the school song "Drink a Highball", Penn fans toss toast on the football stadium after the third quarter.
