Give back in honor of your favorite food items that you ate during your summer program! Scroll to the end of the post for instructions on how to donate!
No matter where your Joyce Ivy program led you for your summer, there is no doubt that it involved learning, meeting lots of awesome new friends, and of course, FOOD. Dining halls can become boring over time, but thankfully the restaurant scene around college campuses can break up the monotony of the meal plan.
We’re going on a trip down memory lane, so don’t forget to bring some cash for snacks!
We’re going on a trip down memory lane, so don’t forget to bring some cash for snacks!
Barnard College
Do you remember Henry’s by chance? If you managed to escape the campus dining halls, you might have found that the Arugula is truly greener on the other side. This cute cafe has a lovely menu (with cheap salads). Ordering the Henry’s Chicken Milanese-Baby Arugala salad with lemon vinaigrette would cost you $24.00. Worth it for a break in the dining hall monotony.
Brown University
Finals and midterms require a lot of energy, and it’s good to have sugar in your system to be alert to study for them. If you were a Brown student for a couple of months, you may have headed to the Duck & Bunny. This “snuggery” has tea and cupcakes baked fresh daily on the premises, including treats for vegans and those allergic to gluten. A Mini cupcake costs $1.25 while a maxi costs $2.75. The price of your Uber ride there would run you about $4. For between $5 and $7, you could get your sugar fix and be on to tackle your toughest tests. Would you be willing to donate that cash to Joyce Ivy instead?
Cornell
A trip to Glenwood Pines surely broke the steady rhythm of dorm dining for those scholars who attended Cornell’s Summer Session. This cute roadside tavern serves the Pinesburger, a famous six-ounce patty that comes with lettuce, onion, tomato, Thousand Island, and cheese on French bread. What more can a carnivore ask for? At $5.75, and assuming you threw down for the thirteen-dollar Uber trip rather than walking all the way from Cornell’s campus, the price of this burger and transit would cost you just under 19 bucks. That’s the kind of sacrifice that would really add up donations for JIF, but not add up on calories at all.
Emory
Dave’s Cosmic Subs. This groovy little shop has all of Dave’s wondrous sandwich creations, which amazingly add up to 30 different sub options. If you and your friends from Emory craved Dave’s between studying and partying, for a quick ten-dollar Uber ride, you could make it to Dave’s easily and then drop a few bucks on your much-deserved sandwich. But now that summer is far away, and you’re either at home or school, donate in memory of that delicious Dave’s sub you ate in that magical summer!
Harvard
Elle Woods probably had many a chocolate craving during her tumultuous law school career at Harvard, as I’m sure your summer was! If you needed LA Burdick’s Chocolates to satisfy your cocoa desire, then a box of Chocolate Penguins would be sure to do the trick. At $32, it’s a splurge. But if you don’t splurge on penguins, I can’t imagine what you would splurge on, especially since these penguins are made of chocolate. If you would make the CHOCOLATE PENGUIN DONATION to honor the delicious experience of your summer session at Harvard, you would be furthering the goals of Joyce Ivy and supporting the cause of future scholars!
Johns Hopkins
Hope your summer of being a Blue Jay involved at least one excursion to the nearby Papermoon Diner! This quirky place is like a Max and Erma’s on steroids with all of the toys and miscellaneous objects on the walls. The curious atmosphere is upheld with wondrous food. If you ordered their Crispy Chicken Salad, you’d be out twelve bucks, but in for a delicious experience. In honor of this crispy, meaty, and kind of healthy dish, donating the CRISPY DONATION would be a solid contribution to the program that made your whole experience possible!
MIT
If you were on your way to MIT for your summer experience, you may have wanted some ice cream before your final...Does Tosci’s ring a bell? Sugar is a lifesaver in late night study sessions, and MIT Summer Scholars can get their quick fix from right around the corner from the Cambridge campus at Toscanini’s Ice Cream Parlor. Hopefully your summer experience was as delectable as a scoop or two of Burnt Caramel Ice Cream. Weighing in at $7 for a large cup, you can fuel yourself for all the challenges a summer program at MIT brings. If you want to forgo the calories, however, a donation of the same price to Joyce Ivy would be equally delectable to the future scholars who need funding to experience their own summer adventures.
Smith
According to Niche.com, Smith College gets an A+ in Off-campus dining. So if you went to Northampton, MA for your summer, you may have made a few trips to Local Burger. A simple hamburger would cost you $5.89. Burgers are great, but wouldn’t it be greater if donations to the organization which makes these trips possible for young women added up as fast as money spent on diner trips? Now that your summer program is over, and you don’t necessarily have to fork over $5.89 for a Local Burger, it may be a good time to put that cash towards furthering the Joyce Ivy Foundation’s cause.
Stanford
If your plane ticket led you a little further out west to Stanford University, you’re probably familiar with Co-Ho, one of Stanford’s many abbreviations for their Coffee House on campus. It’s just a short walk from Flo-Mo, the classic residence of summer scholars. I didn’t really drink coffee before I discovered Co-Ho in the weeks leading up to midterms at Stanford. Ever since then, I’ve committed to spending $4 - $5 for a Tall cup of the stuff on the regular. In a midterm or finals week, it’s crucial for survival. However, if it’s not finals week and there is no need to pull any crazy all-nighters, consider using that cash for a small donation to the Joyce Ivy foundation, so others can go experience the hectic Stanford life for a couple months, too!
Washington University (St. Louis)
Washington University summer scholars, I hope you got a chance to make it to the Loop during your study breaks. Scholars, if you like food, you would LOVE the Loop. Featuring a variety of restaurants to serve a wide range of taste buds, the Loop has your basic Subway, QDoba, Starbucks, Chipotle, and various other places to satisfy any student’s need for froyo and caffeine. (If you have managed to avoid these addictions through your academic career, I applaud you.) When I look at the variety of restaurants on the 6000 block of Delmar, I think of the variety of colleges which sponsor the Joyce Ivy Foundation. Take Blueberry Hill, an iconic St. Louis eatery. The Loop Club sandwich costs $7.25, and while supporting local business in return for a delicious sandwich is awesome, it’s equally awesome to support the Joyce Ivy Foundation in exchange for a memorable summer experience.
Yale
Fast food joints seem to have taken over the country, but for residents and students in New Haven, they’re few and far in between. No McDonalds, no Panera. As far as Pizza goes, New Haven is Ballin’. You may have went to Sally’s or Pepe’s, or even closer to campus to Bar. For a medium pie at Sally’s, you’ll spend $10.25, and maybe share a slice with a friend. Would you share a slice with a future scholar? Then for the price of a pizza, consider donating to support Joyce Ivy and future scholars.
