Stanford University is a private research university located
in Stanford, California. It holds the title of being one of the most
prestigious schools in the world with the highest undergraduate selectivity.
Stanford was founded in 1885 by former U.S. Senator, Leland Stanford and his
wife Jane Stanford in memory of their son, Leland Stanford Jr.
Here are some more fun facts about Stanford University:
- During Full Moon on the Quad, freshmen are kissed at midnight by seniors under the first full moon of the Autumn Quarter.
- There are 13,000 bikes on Stanford Campus daily. It has been named a platinum-level "Bicycle Friendly University."
- Fountain hopping is a beloved tradition where students are able to hop into one of the 25 fountains on campus.
- The Wacky Walk occurs during graduation, when undergraduates march into Stanford Stadium in a wide array of costumes.
- The school's unofficial mascot is the Stanford tree.
- Tuition was free until 1920.
- Notable alumni include: Actress Reese Witherspoon; Google Founder Larry Page; Author John Steinbeck; Football Player Richard Sherman; President Herbert Hoover.
