My name is Erin Burbach and I am very excited to be a Joyce Ivy Fellow. I am currently a junior at Central High School in Omaha, Nebraska. I am second-in-command of the Art Club which mostly involves organizational duties and painting murals for the English Department. I also volunteer at the Joslyn Art Museum assisting with classes and public art events. I enjoy reading lots of books, biking, and yoga in my free time.
Over the summer, I had the opportunity to attend the Yale Young Global Scholars Politics, Law, and Economics program due to the generosity of Joyce Ivy. My experience at Yale transformed my vision for the future and my own self-confidence. I went from an interest in environmental science to wanting nothing than a philosophy degree. For the first time, I realized that practicality was not the only legitimate reason for choosing a career path. I was exposed to people who encouraged me pursue my passions and gave me viable options for doing so. I also made an incredible network of friends who were just as motivated and nerdy as me. Yale opened me up to so many different possibilities that I never would have considered before and I am very excited to help others have an experience like mine.
In the future, I would like to pursue a double major in mathematics and philosophy and possibly get a job somewhere along the way.
