Why did you choose your summer program?
I have always had an immense love for writing and when I read the description of Smith College's Young Women's Writing Program, it was like someone picked my brain and created the perfect program for me.
What is your favorite memory from your summer program?
Every evening after dinner, all my friends and I gathered in the room next door to mine, 303, and we shared all our writing for the day or any piece we found significant. It was an amazing environment to be in. After we had all shared everything we wanted to, we all just chilled and chatted about anything and everything for hours. That, by far, was my favorite memory from my summer program.
Why did you decide to become a Fellow?
I really owe a lot to the JIF, without them, my summer program wouldn't have been possible for my family. Also, my summer program was the best time of my life and I wanted to ensure that every girl from this point on went into her summer program fearless, confident, and ready to embark on their own once-in-a-lifetime adventure.
What do you like best about the JIF?
I love that the JIF empowers and supports successful women. In this day and age, it is so important for women to be stepping up to the plate and showing what they've got and I love that the JIF stands for and sponsors just that.
How did the JIF affect who/where you are today?
The JIF has shown me that I can achieve more than I originally thought. At the gala earlier this year, the guest speaker really inspired me. Through her story, I realized that I shouldn't let things like test scores and fear of failure hold me back from aiming for the stars; I realized in order to be successful, I really need to just go for things. As a result of being surrounded by such smart, STEM-empowering ladies, I have also decided to major in statistics as well as creative writing. I have always had an aptitude for math, but was fearful of acting on it because of how many view those types of careers. I know now, as a result of the JIF, that I can have a successful and happy life with a career in math and that I should reach high and follow my dreams.
If you could give any advice to a potential JIF Scholar about anything regarding this experience, what would you say?
Go for it. Absolutely go for it. This experience (the JIF and my summer program) have changed my life. I am more confident in myself and my abilities and have been exposed to so many new things and ideas and it all has overall made me a better me, the me I am today.
