I am so grateful for the Joyce Ivy Foundation, because they gave me the opportunity to attend Washington University in St. Louis High School Summer Scholars Program this past summer. The HSSS program was 5 weeks long and I took two classes, American Politics and Introduction to Linguistics. I know those classes do not sound anything like each other, but you would be surprised how much they actually intertwine! These classes made me realize that I would like to pursue a career that utilizes both my love for politics and my love for language. The best part was, I did not have to spend every waking minute studying, but I got to explore St. Louis and spend lots of time meeting new people! My favorite memory may sound a little insane, but I will never forget going to the Delmar Loop with my friends when a tornado came our way, and we walked back to the dorms in a huge storm, and mysteriously getting kimchi inside my shoe! My friends and I still communicate often, and I am happy to have made these connections. Neither of my parents attended college and medical bills made a nearly $8,000 program impossible, but the generosity of JIF made it possible.
I must give a shout-out to my amazing buddy, Morgan Schultz, and my St. Louis Mom, Karen Conant. Even though Morgan and I attended different sessions, I found it so helpful to have her to talk to and I am very excited to be Fellows together! Karen made my stay so enjoyable, and it was great to known someone was there for me while I was away from home.
Being a part of JIF has been life-changing and I am so thankful to be a part of this inspiring group of young women!
