Fellow Profile: Mina Yuan, JIF '15

Hi everyone! I’m Mina Yuan, a high school junior from Maple Grove, Minnesota and a 2015 JIF Summer Scholar. As an aspiring physician, I love just about everything health-related. At home, I constantly struggle to wean my mom off ramen and onto fresh vegetables (it’s an ongoing effort), and at school, I participate in mental and chemical health clubs. In my free time, I practice yoga, “health-ify” old recipes, and feed my sheet mask addiction. As you can probably tell, I adore nutrition, but I’m also fascinated by neuroscience and cardiology.

Luckily for me, in July 2015, Joyce Ivy funded my participation in Brown University’s “So You Want to be a Doctor” program, for which I will forever feel grateful. I loved every second of my time at Brown, whether it was spent examining human cadavers, shadowing physicians, or shopping on Thayer Street. I gained immeasurable self-confidence, experience, and insight into my future from my three weeks at Brown’s pre-college program, and I now feel much more comfortable when I think about applying to colleges next year. JIF provided so much support through mentors and conference calls to prepare me for my trip, and I am exhilarated to do the same as a Fellow this year. Joyce Ivy is so close to my heart, and I hope to help other girls achieve their dreams through this wonderful organization. I can’t wait to meet everyone, and I know this will be an amazing year!
