My counselor invited all the girls in the top 15% of their class to apply to be a Joyce Ivy Scholar. Knowing it was a long shot, I was the only one that followed through and I received a scholarship that fully financed a two-week course on archeology for me.
From the moment I stepped foot onto Brown's campus I felt at home. The timelessness of the campus left me in awe and the fact that I was actually at Brown hit me. I learned so much in the classroom and on the streets of Providence. The most important lesson for me was that I was capable, meaning that I did everything on my own. I want to share the power a young woman has when she is independent with girls who are in the same situation as I was. When a young woman discovers her power, she is unstoppable.
It was a beautiful two weeks that I will never forget and for this I am forever indebted to the Joyce Ivy Foundation, and now as I am a high school senior I want to give back.
