Fellow Profile:Lucy Cordes, JIF '15

Hello!  My name is Lucy Cordes and I am a 2015 Joyce Ivy Alumna.  I am honored to be a part of this year’s group of JIF Fellows!

I attend Central High School in downtown Omaha, Nebraska.  I sing in two choirs at school, am an active member of the student council, and participate in math contests and Academic Decathlon.  I recently joined engineering club, Future Business Leaders of America, and Spanish National Honor Society, and this year I was in the school musical for the first time after two years on the cross-country team.  In my free time I like to play piano, read fantasy novels, tap dance, and spend time with my dog (Hoover), twin sister (Thelma), and the rest of my family.

Thanks to Joyce Ivy, I stretched my comfort zone to the max and had so many “firsts” that I never dreamed that I had the courage to do.

This summer, I spent two weeks at Brown University taking a course called Presenting to the Public which really built up my confidence and challenged me to overcome my usually reserved personality.  I met so many incredible young people, got the chance to experience life away from home, and gained new insight about the college experience.  My summer adventure was truly empowering and has given me greater independence and the courage to try new things that I previously lacked, in addition to memories that I will cherish forever!

I am so grateful to be a JIF Fellow and be involved in giving more young women from the Midwest the opportunity that I had!
