  • Established in 1885 in Stanford, California, with classes starting in 1891, Stanford University was founded by Leland Stanford and his wife in memory of their son, Leland Stanford, Jr., who died at the age of 15 from typhoid.
  • The university was established as a coeducational and non-denominational institution imparting free-of-cost education until the mid-1930’s.
  • With a 5.1% undergraduate acceptance rate, majority of students at Stanford have a 4.0 and above GPA, rank in the top 10% of their high school class, and have a 30-36 act.
  • Stanford has 35 varsity sports, and more than 36 club sports, dozens of club teams and intramural opportunities that allows students to cheer for the Cardinals a year-round experience.
  • There are more than 650 student organizations on campus.
  • Faculty and alumni of Stanford University have founded many prominent companies including: Google, Nike, GAP, Firefox, Yahoo, PayPal, etc.
  • Stanford students have won medals in every Olympic Games since 1908, winning 244 Olympic medals total, 129 of them gold.
  • The unofficial name for the Stanford mascot is- The Stanford Tree.
  • The motto of Stanford University is: “Die Luft der Freheit weht”. Translated from the German language, this quotation from Ulrich von utten means, “The wind of freedom blows.”   
  • Stanford has fun traditions like Full Moon on the Quad, during which freshman are kissed at midnight by seniors under the first full moon of Autumn Quarter.
  • Bicycling is one of the most popular forms of on-campus transportation, with estimated 13,000 bikes on campus daily.
