Scholarship Saturday: Moody's Mega Math Challenge

by Christina Xu

What’s better than a fun math competition coupled with scholarships? The Moody’s Mega Math Challenge is a realistic math application competition where participants have exactly 14-hours to come up with a math model to solve a real-world problem. Last year, when I participated, the problem was with car sharing and the increasing usage of carpooling.
This challenge is not your typical math computation, against-the-clock, strategic problem set sort of competition– rather, it’s about finally making your math teacher’s words of “you will use this in real-life” come true. While it definitely is a different way of looking at the formulas, numbers, and rules you have been taught, the application truly gives you a new perspective into math and the problems we are faced with today.

And if that wasn’t enough initiative to participate, did I mention there is $150,000 in scholarships? As a participant last year, I highly encourage everyone to give it a shot–because who knows? You might just be flying over to NYC in a couple months to receive your award.
