Today is our 2017-2018 Joyce Ivy Foundation blog kickoff! We are very excited to get started! In the coming year, we hope to provide you with up-to-date information and opportunities regarding scholarships; college applications, decisions, and choices; financial aid; leadership and summer program opportunities; and so much more! Here are the Fellows in charge of Communications for the 2017-2018 year:
Kate Tayler
Howdy! My name is Kate Tayler and I am a college freshman at Bowling Green State University. I am majoring in theatre with a specialization in design and technical theatre in hopes of pursuing a career in stage management. Although I’m in love with Bowling Green, Ohio, my hometown is Monroe, Michigan and I just graduated from Monroe High School this past year. This is my third year as a Fellow and I am the Co-Lead for Communications again this year, alongside Jessica Chan and an incredibly talented team of Communications Fellows! I am very much looking forward to seeing all the incredible things that this team can do this year!
I was a Joyce Ivy Summer Scholar in the summer of 2015. I used my scholarship to attend Smith College’s two-week Young Women’s Writing Program. My time there instilled in me a lifelong appreciation for writing and poetry and led me to meet some of the very best people I know, including one of my best friends to this day. In addition to the writing skills and amazing people, I also learned through the Foundation that I can and should strive to better myself with a higher education and go after opportunities. This has been one of the most beneficial lessons I’ve learned in my lifetime and I am happy to say that I am putting it in action here at BGSU!
Outside of the Foundation, I enjoy writing for The Odyssey at BGSU, attending plays and musicals, writing, reading, trying new things, and hanging out with my friends.
I look forward to another great year with the Communications Team!
Jessica Chan
Hey y’all! My name is Jessica Chan, I’ll be serving as the Co-Director for the Communications team this year along with Kate. I’m a second year medical student at the Northeast Ohio Medical University, en route to becoming a doctor in the US Army. Back in the day, JIF allowed me to do a summer program at Brown University, learning about science and the human body. As it turns out, this experience solidified both an interest in the infinite field of medicine and a desire to be challenged, and out of high school I entered an accelerated BS/MD program. I completed undergrad in two years at Kent State University, then chose to take a year off during which I studied theology and philosophy at a school close to Vienna, Austria, traveled, spent time with family, volunteered teaching English to refugees, and spent a month walking the Camino de Santiago across Spain. I enjoy adventure, having conversations with strangers, new experiences, and grappling with ideas, and hope to never become complacent in seeking out each of these. As we kick off this year’s blog, I’m excited to see what our team of Fellows will create, and the growth, opportunity, perspective, and wisdom that will be shared. We have a talented team of Fellows and an excellent line-up, and we hope you all will join us for the journey this year!
