Third Annual Joyce Ivy College Admissions Symposium - A Director's Perspective, Part II

This is the busiest time of the Joyce Ivy Foundation's year as we review applications for the Summer Scholars program and, importantly, prepare for the third annual FREE Joyce Ivy College Admissions Symposium (JCAS)!

As a long-time board member of Joyce Ivy, it has been incredibly exciting for me to see this event develop and evolve.  This year, we are looking forward to welcoming representatives from Dartmouth, Duke, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Princeton, Stanford, Penn, Wellesley, and Yale to the space at Washtenaw Intermediate School District Teaching and Learning Center in Ypsilanti, Michigan.  On Friday, May 9, college admissions experts will guide high school guidance counselors and community leaders through best practices around each aspect of college applications and financial aid, and share their wealth of experience.  The next day, Saturday, May 10, will bring a similar set of topics for a different audience: high-achieving female high school juniors and their families from Michigan and Ohio.

In the past, attendees have truly run the gamut of demographics.  On Friday, we are expecting a number of first- and second-year high school counselors, mid-career veterans, and long-time professionals from a variety of schools-- urban, rural, and suburban.  The discussions that arise amongst the mixture of Friday attendees is often highly insightful and has been mentioned in our feedback forms as one of the very helpful aspects of attending for the counselors.

Similarly, Saturday attendees for the student-and-parent session also bring a variety of experience.  There will be a number of families for which it is their first time going through the college admissions process, while others will attend with their youngest child after having sent older siblings off to school recently.  JCAS attending families also come from diverse backgrounds.  We are expecting every type of  attendee, from those who will be first generation college goers to students whose parents or siblings have attended some of the colleges and universities represented at JCAS for undergraduate and/or graduate educations.  We also expect that every level of income and geographic demography will be represented in the attending population.  Financial aid is always a hot topic for parents and students alike on Saturday, and we will have a number of sessions explaining how and why those faraway private universities that have shockingly high sticker prices can often end up being more affordable for families than an in-state school.

Please note, this symposium is FREE for all attendees.

To learn more about the day, check out my post from last year which highlights more details, pictures, and provides a more in-depth perspective on how the days go.

Ready to come?  We can't wait to meet you!
