Fellow Profile: Rayonna Burton-Jernigan, JIF '14

Hi! My name is Rayonna Burton-Jernigan or Ray. I am currently a freshman at Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore, MD. I am originally from Cleveland, OH and I attended Shaw High School. I was in National Honor Society, National Society of High School Scholars, Urban League of Greater Cleveland and Minds Matter Cleveland. I played JV and Varsity volleyball for two years, photography club for three years and yearbook for all four years.

I had the pleasure of attending two summer programs, one as a summer scholar. My first summer program (between Sophomore and Junior Year) was at Johns Hopkins University for five weeks and was an experience that I will always remember. I loved the campus, the people, and the environment. While the classes were rigorous, the program made it worthwhile. My second summer program (between Junior and Senior Year) was at Stanford University where I got to become friends with Krishaun Burns and Hannah French. I got to experience a new culture in California, new people and new connections that I will always treasure.

At Loyola, I am majoring in Communications/Journalism and minoring in Photography. I am happy to be back in Baltimore, but I am a Cleveland girl at heart. I am not playing any sports at the moment because I am still adjusting to college but once my Sophomore year comes, I will be playing volleyball.  I am volunteering at the local animal shelter and associated with several women’s groups around campus. Overall I am enjoying my new home in Baltimore.

Being a part of the Joyce Ivy Fellows will not only allow me to make connections and network with new people but, also give me the opportunity to help juniors and seniors who will soon be in my place in a few years.
