College Spotlight: Smith College

Smith College's Campus Center, where students go for their everyday needs (no, it's not a museum)
Smith College
  • This one is for the ladies!! That’s right! Smith College is an all-girls school with around 2,700 lucky ladies in attendance. Smith is located in Northampton, Massachusetts.
  • Smith is home to the oldest all-female a cappella group, the Smiffenpoofs. The Smiffenpoofs have been rocking the house since 1936.
  • Instead of the typical dorm setting, Smith College has 36 different self-governing houses to live in.
  • Smith College’s colors are usually listed as blue and gold these days, but back when Smith was founded, white was the only school color. Gold was used as an accent to this white, but when the school’s athletes (go Pioneers!) needed a dark color for away games, blue was adopted into the mix.
  • It is a running tradition for over 100 years for Smithies to come together Friday afternoons for tea.
  • Smithies celebrate many holidays unique to Smith College such as Julia Child Day, Convocation, Mountain Day, Otelia Cromwell Day, Rally Day, Ivy Day and Illumination Night, and Commencement Weekend.
  • Boo! Rumors for centuries have had it that a secret staircase in the Sessions House is haunted by the eldest daughter of the house’s builder, Lucy, and her heartbroken lover, General Burgoyne.
  • Notable alumnae include poet and author of The Bell Jar, Sylvia Plath; former First Ladies, Nancy Reagan and Barbara Bush; chef, Julia Child; and United States Senator, Tammy Baldwin.
  • You’ve got to be quite the brainy lady to get into Smith. The typical ACT score of a Smithie falls between 28 and 31 and their average high school GPA is a 3.9.
