- Located in (you guessed it) Chicago, University of Chicago has around 5,600 undergraduate students. More specifically than just Chicago, UChicago is located in Hyde Park, which is the area where Barack Obama lives.
- This year is University of Chicago’s 125th birthday!
- Anyone familiar with the Divergent series may recognize UChicago’s Mansueto Library, as it is featured in the movie Divergent as the Erudite Library.
- Since its founding in 1890, 89 University of Chicago alumni have won Nobel Prizes. In addition, about 40% of all Nobel Prizes in economics were awarded to UChicago alumni.
- Their school mascot is a phoenix named Phil. UChicago participates in 19 different Division III sports and their sports teams go by the nickname “Maroons” to match their school color.
- Notable alumni to have been lucky enough to attend University of Chicago include presidential candidate, Bernie Sanders; Up actor, Ed Asner; and astronomer, Edwin Hubble.
- UChicago is known for its “Uncommon Application.” The application essays are known for having very creative prompts, usually generated by current or previous students. For example, one of the prompts this year is: “Joan of Arkansas. Queen Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Babe Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Mash up a historical figure with a new time period, environment, location, or occupation, and tell us their story.”
- It isn’t all fun and games at University of Chicago, however. It takes hard work to get in! They have an acceptance rate of only 7.8% and most of their students got a 31-34 on their ACT.
