Hometown: Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio
High School: Walsh Jesuit High School
Major(s): Biomedical engineering with a minor in neuroscience
Summer Program: Summer@Brown
Course: Brain Basics: From Biology to Behavior

Why did you choose your summer program?

I chose the Brain Basics course at the Summer@Brown summer program, because when I graduate college my aspiration is to become a pediatric neurosurgeon, and I felt that this course enabled me to learn more about the mechanics of the brain.

What is your favorite memory from your summer program?

My favorite memory from my summer program is when my friends Olivia, Carol, and myself decided to go on a weekend trip Summer@Brown offers to Boston, Massachusetts. The trip was so much fun! My friends and I went to the New England aquarium and had the amazing opportunity to see penguins up close. After we went to the aquarium, we went for lunch in an out door market and had the opportunity to see live music performances from various bands. Without Joyce Ivy, I would not had have the opportunity to experience this amazing memory.

Why did you decide to become a Fellow?

I decided to become a Joyce Ivy Fellow, because I want to pay forward the great experience Joyce Ivy has enabled me to participate this past summer at Brown University, and I want to share my experience with future Joyce Ivy Alumna. Through the fellow program I will be able to guide Joyce Ivy summer scholars and give them advice about places to go and what fun things are available for them to explore while at Brown University.

What do you like best about JIF?

What I like best about the Joyce Ivy Foundation is that they are like fairy godmothers who grant the dreams of Midwestern girls who want to experience life at an Ivy League school. From a young age I have always dreamed of visiting an Ivy League school, but due to my financial situation of coming from a single mother family I would have never been able to afford a trip to one. Thanks to the Joyce Ivy Foundation, I was able to take a once in a lifetime trip to an Ivy League school and make friendships that will last a lifetime. I am truly thankful to the Joyce Ivy Foundation for all they do in order to help not only my dream, but the dreams of many other girls come true.

How did JIF affect who/where you are today?

The Joyce Ivy Foundation affected me today, because it enabled me to experience a lot of firsts in my life. Before the JIF, I had never traveled by myself and had never flown on an airplane on my own to the east coast. Thanks to the JIF I was able to conquer these experiences and have a great time. This experience has also opened my eyes to the possibility that I may actually have what it takes to attain an education at a highly selective university.

If you could give any advice to a potential JIF Scholar about anything regarding this experience, what would you say?

If I could give any advice to a potential JIF Scholar it would be to apply for the summer scholar program regardless if you think you can get in or not. Last year when I applied for the program, I did not believe that I would be named a scholar. I thought that you had to have a perfect 36 on the ACT and a 4.6 while taking six A.P. classes. However, thanks to my mom who supported me and told me to apply regardless if I got in or not, I applied and was named a scholar without a perfect A.C.T. and six A.P. classes. Without the advice of my mom to apply and the generosity of Joyce Ivy, I would not have had this amazing experience.
