College Spotlight: California Institute of Technology (Caltech)



  • Located in Pasadena, California, California Institute of Technology (or Caltech) is a private research college that currently has a little over 2,200 students enrolled.
  • Go orange! Go white! The Caltech beavers are here to fight! Caltech is home to 13 Division III varsity sports.
  • Tradition is key at Caltech. For example, every midnight on Halloween, the annual Pumpkin Drop takes place. This is where students drop pumpkins into liquid nitrogen from the top of the library to see if they’ll glow.
  • You’ll never go hungry while at Caltech; each house has a fully stocked kitchen at all times!
  • If you aren’t one for traditional PE classes, Caltech has something for you. They feature several rather unusual Phys Ed classes such as ultimate frisbee, power walking, and table tennis.
  • Caltech understands college students’ late night studying tendencies and they have the fix for that! There is a student-run coffee shop that runs from 10pm until 2am for late night energy needs.
  • Among being famous for other things, Caltech has a history in television and cinema. The campus has been featured in Legally Blonde, Mission: Impossible, Entourage, The West Wing, The X-Files, and several other works of film.
  • Notable people to have attended Caltech include physicist, Kip Thorne; astronaut, Frank Borman; and scientist, Frances Arnold.
