Getting a higher education is almost crucial in today's society to make a "successful living," depending on what your definition of success is. It's quite an ambiguous word. But not everyone's definition of success requires that they attend a 2-year or 4-year higher institution. Education can come from non-traditional places as well. Traveling will educate you about the world and its inhabitants. Volunteering will educate you about different cultures and what is important in each individual one. Working or participating in an internship will give you valuable experience and potentially lead you in the direction that you want to go.
One educational experience that combines all of the above is Semester at Sea. Think of Suite Life on Deck if you can. With this program, you are able to set sail around the world while studying, attending classes, and participating in cocurricular activities. You have the option to either do a gap year or go while in university. Whatever your major is, do not fret about having to give that up -- you don't! Credits transfer, too.
