Welcome to the Joyce Ivy Blog [2022-2023 Edition]!

Hello everyone! Whether you are a prospective Joyce Ivy Summer Scholar applicant, a current one digging through the resources Joyce Ivy has to offer, an alumni reflecting back on their JIF experience, or just someone curled up on their couch looking to read something with a mug of coffee in their hands, we hope you will enjoy reading the Joyce Ivy Blog!

This year, the Joyce Ivy Blog will be run by the Fellow Relations team, all current Joyce Ivy Fellows and past or current Summer Scholars. Our authors are Genesis Bond Hollingsworth (JIF ‘22), Himani Yarlagadda (JIF ‘21), Lily Raishouni (JIF ‘22), Shubhra Mishra (JIF ‘20), and Taylor Lucas (JIF ‘22). If you want to read more about any of our others, feel free to check out the Fellows tab of their blog and show some love for their Fellow Profiles!

In the meantime, read more about the blog, Joyce Ivy, and our purpose!

What is Joyce Ivy?

Chances are that you know a bit about Joyce Ivy and its mission if you’re already here. Either that, or you went through a very long and complicated internet rabbit hole.

The Joyce Ivy Foundation makes women empowerment the core of its purpose by providing merit scholarships for partnered summer programs for high school women in the Midwest. Majority of the foundation’s scholarship money goes to supporting those in greatest financial need so that they might pursue the educational and social opportunities that these summer programs bring. If you are interested in applying for the scholarship or know of anyone that would, please visit the main Joyce Ivy website and also check out the various blog posts regarding tips, tricks, and mantras while applying for the Joyce Ivy scholarship.

The Joyce Ivy Fellows team is a group of around 30 past and current Summer Scholars that are dedicated to contributing to the Joyce Ivy experience and “paying it forward” for future Joyce Ivy members. Fellows are selected through a competitive application process and are then sorted into different teams whose roles can range from working to spread the Joyce Ivy message to other schools, maintaining information on the foundation, and serving as mentors for the larger Joyce Ivy community. The Senior Fellow(s) head each team, and the larger Fellows program is headed by our awesome Director of Fellows, Eva McCord!

The Fellows Relation team, the primary author of the blog posts, is incredibly excited to bring a wonderful blog experience to our readers. Anticipate biweekly posts! Other than that, our team also organizes Fellow bonding experiences, helps out with the Joyce Ivy alumnae newsletter, and, all in all, keeps the Fellows community tightly-knit.

What Is the Blog?

The Joyce Ivy blog aims to provide young individuals information and advice, authored by people similar to themselves. (This is a great moment to check out the “About Us” section as well!)

The blog, this year, will focus on topics from fellow interviews and application tips to self-care and financial aid. We’ll also be bringing back the Scholarship Saturday series from years prior, and we will discuss various other scholarship opportunities pertaining to summer programs and college.

Final Thoughts

On behalf of the entire Fellow Relations team, we are excited to welcome you to a new year of blog-reading and contemplating! Please look forward to our next post, and until then, have fun browsing the deep, dark corners of the Joyce Ivy blog!

Himani Yarlagadda is a senior at Detroit Country Day Upper School and hopes to explore an interdisciplinary approach to mathematics and biology, with a focus in medicine. In her free time, she enjoys playing with her golden retriever, writing poems at wee hours of the night, playing the flute, and kicking back to watch movies with her family.
